Easley played in all 11 games in 1976 as a freshman. He gained 493 yards and scored five touchdowns, including 100 yards rushing against Syracuse. In 1977, Walter was listed as number one fullback with Paul Lumley. He rushed for 148 yards in the spring Blue-Gold game. In 1978, Walter switched from fullback to linebacker and was listed as the number one strong side linebacker. He did not play in 1978. He had 940 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns in his previous two years at running back. He gained 3,500 yards at Stonewall Jackson High School.
