Martin played on a state runner-up team at Huntington High School, where he anchored the defense as a linebacker. He was also named second team All-State. He started at center for WVU's freshman team. Martin would then go on to play tackle and middle guard as a sophomore. A knee injury, however, kept him out his sophomore year. Martin was thought to possess great quickness and had a good attitude and gave a lot of second effort.
