Hill was nicknamed "Rhino" by his teammates. He was coached by Bill Foltz at Lenape Regional High School where he received All-State and All-America honors as a co-captain at Lenape. Coming to WVU, he was regarded as an outstanding prospect. During his sophomore year, he was considered one of the best blockers on the squad in addition to being the fastest lineman. That season, he started two games at offensive tackle. Hill's aggressiveness made up for the disability in his left arm. During his junior year, he was shifted back to tackle after playing some guard the previous year. He also lettered in wrestling and placed third in conference tournament.
