McDay was a transfer student from Virginia Tech and he started to play for WVU in 1975. He caught four tosses for 91 yards for junior varsity team during 1974-1975 season, including a 63-yard touchdown catch from Danny Williams. In 1975, McDay was the split end. In 1976, he was listed number two tight end behind Randy Swinson. He started all 11 games in 1976, and caught 13 passes for 214 yards. McDay earned letters in football, wrestling and track at Greater Johnstown High School, where he was also selected All-Conference, All-WPIAL and All-State. He majored in social work.
