Shirley D. Robinson was the first African-American athlete to participate in women’s tennis at West Virginia University, joining the team in 1981 after an illustrious career at Morgantown High School. Though she received no formal training, she made the team after trying-out. Robinson is currently the president of the Morgantown Racquet Club, the only community tennis association for Morgantown and a member of the United States Tennis Association's Mid-Atlantic (D.C., Md., Va., and W. Va.) Diversity and Inclusion committee.
