Moon attended Connellsville High School where he won the Pennsylvania state high school high jumping championship with a jump of 6 feet, 1 inch as a senior. However, his best jump his senior year was leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. Entering his freshman year at WVU "The Moon" as opposed to the sky was considered his limit. Moon unofficially set WVU's high jump record at practice, jumping 6 feet, 3 and one-half inches while fooling around at practice. As a sophomore Moon won the indoor high jump title with a leap of 6 feet, 4 and three-eighths inches as he helped WVU finish second at the Southern Conference indoor championships.
In his junior year, he won the conference title with a jump of 46 feet, three-quarters inches. He also set a new varsity record in the high jump. The following year, as a senior, he lost his triple jump title as he finished second with a jump of 44 feet, 7 inches while also taking second in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches. He had actually tied for first, but lost out because of more misses. Moon showed his all-around capabilities by running a leg on the WVU 440-yard relay that placed second with a time of 42.45 seconds.
