McKelvey-White became the first African-American female assistant in WVU history when she joined the women's track and field staff in 1997. While competing for Clemson, she garnered All-America honors in the long jump three times (NCAA indoor in 1993 and 1994 and NCAA outdoor in 1993). She was the Atlantic Coast Conference champion in that same event in 1992 and 1994. In 1993, she was a member of the ACC champion 4x100-meter relay team. McKelvey-White was also a qualifier for the USATF Nationals in 1993 and 1994. Upon completing her career at Clemson, she joined the South Carolina staff as an assistant coach. She then came to WVU in 1997 as an assistant coach with the jumpers and hurdlers.
