Lockwood joined the WVU staff in 2000 as a former Mountaineer defensive back and a link to the proud tradition of WVU's  undefeated 1988 Fiesta Bowl team. Lockwood came to WVU from Wyoming where he served as defensive secondary coach for the Cowboys. Prior to that, Lockwood had spent the previous five seasons at Memphis coaching the secondary and wide receivers. In 1994, Lockwood coached the James Madison receivers and from 1990-93 he coached tight ends and receivers at Delaware. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at WVU in 1989.

He was a four-year letterman in the WVU secondary from 1985-1988. Lockwood recorded 58 career tackles, seven PBU and two interceptions. He was a member of WVU's 1984 Bluebonnet, 1987 Sun and 1988 Fiesta bowls teams and earned Mountaineer Club honors.
