The History of Integration of Sports at West Virginia University

A Brief History of Women’s Track and Field at
West Virginia University

The women’s track and field team was established in 1978. From its onset the team competed at a very high level rising to a formidable position in the Eastern ranks. The team then began to compete at the Penn Relays and the Millrose Games. It was during the Crain-Nardelli reign that West Virginia University produced some of its most tremendous athletes. However, without a doubt African Americans Connie Ellerbe and Alethea Moody were two of the best.
