Moon attended Connellsville High where he won the Pennsylvania state high school high jumping championship with a jump of 6 feet 1 inch as a senior. However, his best jump his senior year was leap of 6 feet 2 inches. Entering his freshman year at West Virginia University the "moon" as opposed to the sky was considered his limit. Maurice unofficially set West Virginia's high jump record at practice jumping 6 feet 3-1/2 inches while fooling around at practice. As a sophomore Maurice won the indoor high jump title with a leap of 6 feet 4 3/8 inches as he helped West Virginia University finish second at the Southern Conference indoor championships. In his junior year he won the conference title with a jump of 46 feet 3/4 inches. He also set a new varsity record in the high jump. The following year as a senior he lost his triple jump title as he finished second with a jump of 44 feet 7 inches while also taking second in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet 2 inches. He had actually tied for first but lost out because of more misses. Moon showed his all round capabilities by running a leg on the WVU 440 relay which placed second with a time of 42.45 seconds.
