

Kerry made all state at Monongah High and his senior year he was voted Back of the Year Award. He was also named prep All American and won four letters in football, four in track and two in basketball. He also complied the highest number of points in the state track meet his senior year. He also performed on WVU's 440 yard relay. As a freshman he carried the ball 61 times for 308 yards and also scored two touchdowns. He however hurt his ankle that year but was more than able to make up for it during the spring. As a sophomore he was one of the outstanding runners in the nation. He was fours yards short of breaking the sophomore record set by Garrett Ford in 1965, although he missed three and a half games. That year he carried 145 times for 890 yards and six touchdowns. He also set new rushing mark for one game against Temple (291) yards in three quarters. He was named ECAC all star team twice for an Oct 9 showing against William and Mary and Oct 23 for play against Temple.
