A Brief History of Baseball at West Virginia University

Baseball at West Virginia University was established in 1892. The team completed the 1892 season with a 3-3 record. During those developmental years, the team played against athletic clubs, and high schools. Historical records indicate that from 1895-1900, the WVU baseball team played 58 games and won 36. The team was largely devoid of African-American athletes until 1976.

First African-American to Play Baseball at West Virginia University

Bruce Clinton, a transfer student from Potomac State Community College, became West Virginia University's first African-American baseball player offered a scholarship in 1976. Baseball, however, would continue for the most part without very much participation from African-American athletes at WVU.
