The first African-American to wear the old gold and blue was Phillip Edwards, who joined the men’s track and field team in 1961. The following year, Dick Leftridge became the first African-American to play football at WVU. He and Roger Alford were the first African-Americans to receive athletic scholarships from WVU that same year. The history of integration of WVU men’s athletics can be viewed below.
