Ben was an all state quarterback at Wilmington High where he earned three letters in football and two each in basketball and track. Ben led his squad to a 13-0 victory in the Delaware all star game as a senior by passing for one touchdown and passing for 70 yards and playing defensive cornerback. As a freshman Ben led the freshman team to a 3-1 record. He passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 92 yards on 30 carries. In the opening freshman game against Pitt, Ben scored two touchdowns to help WVU to a 17-13 win. He also ran for 53 yards and passed for 77 yards in that game. As a sophomore he was thrown into the staring role against Penn State after injuries claimed the number one and two signal callers. He responded well to his baptism of fire against the Nittany Lions by heaving a 96 yard touchdown pass to Danny Buggs to set a new school record. The following week against Miami he engineered a 95 yard scoring drive that took nine plays and gave WVU the upset victory. In that drive with less than two minutes remaining, Ben completed four of eight passes and scrambled for 14 yards when pressured on another pass. He completed the surge by lofting a 32 yard pass to Marshal Mills for the score. He earned a berth on the ECAC weekly all-star team for his efforts. He ended the year with 544 passing yards on 27 of 93 attempts for five TDs and was the fourth leading rusher on the team with 166 yards on 51 carries and 3 TDs. That year he led the team to victory in three of their last four games. Going into his senior year he had earned the starting berth at quarterback.
