In 1975, Wayne Gatewood was listed as a reserve tackle behind veteran Tom Brandner. Wayne played in all 12 games in the fall of 1975. He was an outstanding young offensive lineman. In 1976, Wayne was listed as number one split tackle, he started all 11 games, and appeared in all 12 games his sophomore year. Wayne was selected as a co-captain for the 1977 season. He majored in business. He was all-city, all-district, and all-metro at Columbus West High School.
