In 1975 Gary played behind veterans Jack Eastward and Gary Lombard at the defensive end spot. He played on the junior varsity squad in the 1974-1975 season. Gary was a two-time All-State at Beaver High School, a high school All-American in his senior year, and he majored in social work. WVU Coach Bowden mentioned, "Gary is a very reckless player and a wonderful young man; all he needs is experience."
